"I work with a variety of people in the community living in their own homes with vastly different levels of needs. Good communication skills are essential in the care industry. Often communication issues are apparent, but my experience of being trained in the “better questions” technique has given me a vital tool that is non-confrontational and offers an easier method to solve problems and empower people to make their own decisions. As a care worker, how many times you have thought you knew the answer to a client’s plight or situation? How often do you feel ‘obliged’ or ‘willed’ to solve issues rather then ask questions? Bayside City Council's assessment officers have been working towards the implementation of the Active Service Model and the establishment of client centred goals over the last three years. All assessment officers recently participated in an "Asking Better Questions" program facilitated by Lindsay Tighe. Feedback from staff has been fantastic, more positive than any other training they have undertaken. The Better Questions program has provided the missing link for staff and I am sorry we did not do this training much earlier in their journey. They are motivated, confident and believe they now have the toolkit to assist them to "ask better questions" to establish genuine client centred goals.

The Home Care Service, Northern Rivers engaged Tina Dolphin to train Care Workers and Administration staff in the "Better Questions are the Answer". We had just commenced an Enablement 'Get Active' pilot and found the information that we learnt valuable in assisting us to 'shift focus' in service delivery from the doing to & doing for to doing with & supporting the person to do for themselves. The impact of asking vs telling and using the listening skills was very powerful and all the staff found it really useful in adapting the technique of asking better questions. Using the 'Better Questioning' model when working through the goal setting process was effective in showing the steps needed to achieve a successful plan. It is something that we will all need to practice but now we have the tools and resources to achieve success.

I have been actively trying to incorporate asking good questions in all my assessments and also with work colleagues. It’s amazing the answers that people can come up with. I have been trying to think about different ways of asking questions so that it stimulates thinking but is non-threatening. It is so liberating to realise that I don’t have to have all the answers.
